How to message privately without a phone number
Your phone number is a permanent ID tied to your real name, your carrier and every account you own. Here’s why most messengers want it — and how to chat without giving it up.
Why apps ask for your phone number
A phone number is a cheap way for an app to stop spam and to find your contacts. But it is also one of the most identifying things about you: it’s linked to your legal name through your carrier, it’s reused across banks and social networks, and it rarely changes. Anyone who has your number can often find your other accounts.
What a phone number reveals
- Your real identity, via carrier records.
- Your contact list, if you let the app upload it.
- Your other accounts, through “find friends by phone number” features.
- A way to target you with SIM-swap attacks.
Messengers that work without a phone number
Reventioned
A private all-in-one app built on the open Nostr network. Your account is a key created on your device — no phone number, email or name. Private chats (1:1 and groups) are end-to-end encrypted with Nostr’s gift-wrap standard, and you also get a social feed, marketplace and Lightning payments. Runs in the browser and installs in one tap. Learn how it works.
Session
A focused private messenger that generates an anonymous ID instead of using your number. Messenger only.
SimpleX Chat
A messenger with no user identifiers at all — you connect by sharing one-time links. Very private, messenger only.
Other Nostr apps
Because Nostr is an open protocol, your Reventioned key also works in other Nostr apps, and you can message people who use them.
How to start chatting without a number (on Reventioned)
- Open reventioned.com on your phone or computer.
- Tap through the welcome screens — your private key is created on the device.
- Write down your 24-word recovery phrase and keep it somewhere safe. It’s the only way to restore your account.
- Share your invite link with a friend, or find people on the Discover feed.
- On your phone, use “Add to Home Screen” to install it like a normal app.
The trade-off: no phone number also means no SMS password reset. Your recovery phrase replaces it. Keep it offline and private.
